Five years after the entry into force of the Japan-UK Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA), the UK-Japan partnership has developed significantly during this period.
Greg Gardner, Director of DBT Japan, at the British Embassy, spoke to Tricker’s England – Est. 1829 about the opportunities this agreement presents for business development.
The agreement was created to open up new opportunities and is now a boost to British craftsmanship being appreciated in Japan, creating new collaborations and further deepening the strong and dynamic links between the two economies.
Some Key Outcomes:
🔹Two-way trade between the UK and Japan in 2025 will reach £33.2 billion, an increase of 4.3% from the previous year
🔹UK exports to Japan up 8.7% to £16 billion
🔹CEPA eliminates and reduces tariffs of up to 11% on select fashion products and up to 30% on footwear
🔹The flexible rules of origin introduced in the agreement will allow UK fashion and textile brands to continue to take advantage of tariff incentives while increasing supply chain flexibility
As we celebrate the fifth anniversary, we celebrate the collaboration between Japan and the UK, creativity and craftsmanship.
The British Embassy in Japan will continue to support more British companies to succeed in the Japanese market.
