Renewable energy stands high on the agenda in the global drive toward decarbonisation and energy security. Japan’s renewables ambitions present opportunities for experienced businesses across the sector. The UK’s strength in offshore and floating offshore wind is of particular interest to Japan. From an ambitious target to reach 10GW offshore wind generation by 2030, and 30-45GW by 2040, including floating, so far, only around 1.7GW has been auctioned, leaving plenty of sites yet to be announced. Opportunity is ripe for any UK offshore wind firm to develop a foothold in the Japanese market.
The Japanese market needs importers to spend time and effort in developing business prospects, and requires a degree of commitment beyond what may be required in other countries; however, the reward is lasting relationships in the third largest economy in the world.
