Tokyo 2020 Emblem Design Competition

Background

The emblems must incorporate the concept that the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games are a Games for the world, for Japan and
for the future.

Sport has the power to inspire; create the future; engender joy through integration; showcase the beauty inherent in exerting effort; inspire some of the greatest moments in human achievement; and enable us to
share all these emotions. There are countless moments in sport that are able to transcend race, history, borders and language, and inspire these emotions in all of us.

The emblems for both the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games and the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games should symbolize all these concepts.

Technological advancements have brought about major changes in media, and the ways in which people communicate with each other have also changed dramatically in recent years.

The designs should embrace these changes and incorporate the beauty of the future, yet also strive to be a functional design. The context of the designs should emphasize further evolution and express the essence of Japanese culture, and seek to rediscover its subtle splendors.
The designs should also integrate an affinity with technology and its future functions.

The designs should communicate these values to the world and be polished and refined, and eventually be acknowledged to embody the above values.

Application Details

Applications are invited for proposed emblem designs for each of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games, hereafter referred to as the “Tokyo 2020 Games” (One design for the 2020 Olympic Games and one for the 2020 Paralympic Games.)

Designs are limited to one design proposal per applicant per Games (one design for the 2020 Olympic and one for the 2020 Paralympic Games).

The emblems will represent the entire Tokyo 2020 Games and will have a variety of uses. Accordingly, the emblem should not merely express an idea, but should be designed taking into account the wide usage to which the emblem will be exposed.
