In February 2015, UKTI Japan held its annual Asset Management Trade Mission and Seminar at the British Embassy in Tokyo.

A number of leading British asset managers were in attendance, and shared their views of the Japanese market and why they attend the event each year.

Lim Beng Eu, Head of Business Development at Aviva Investors, said, “Japan is a very attractive market for us at Aviva Investors. It’s one of the largest revenue opportunities in the Asia-Pacific region.” “It’s got a very big and growing investment trust market – I think the potential is good,” he added.

Some of the challenges in the Japanese market in this sector involve the different regulations that are in force in Japan as compared with the UK. Tsukasa Tokikuni, Head of Investment Counselor Group Japan at Serone Capital Management revealed that they hired a dedicated compliance officer with experience in the Japanese asset management industry to work around this problem.

There are several advantages to attending the event, including access to a wide range of senior investors in the region, networking opportunities, and breaking down the barriers of who to speak to, according to Neil Servis, Chief Executive Officer of Serone Capital Management.
